Excellent 4th Year Externship- Located in Cornelia, Georgia- 1 hour northeast of Atlanta.
For the last 30 years, Cornelia and Clarkesville Veterinary Hospitals have provided high quality and compassionate veterinary services to the communities of beautiful northeast Georgia. We are a seven doctor mixed-animal practice with the added bonus of being a staffed 24 hour emergency hospital. Clarkesville Veterinary Hospital provides unrivaled opportunities to experience a wide range of veterinary medicine in a fun and friendly environment. Over the years, we have hosted numerous externs from schools around the country. They have enjoyed stays as short as one week to as long as two months.
We feel that Clarkesville Vet offers an ideal place to have an externship. Our large doctor staff offers a wide range of practice viewpoints and experiences with seven doctors on staff. There is always someone to demonstrate surgical or medical techniques or to discuss involved medical cases. Every day there is a doctor staffing the ambulatory service. Horses, beef cattle, and goats make up the bulk of our large animal patients, but pigs, llamas, camels and other species are not uncommon around here. One doctor runs the surgeries each day including spays, neuters, mass removals and dental work which are our most common surgeries, but we also perform orthopedic surgeries on a regular basis and extensive soft tissue surgeries such as GDV correction, splenectomies, and other soft tissue surgeries. Our medicine appointments will expose you to various ages of wellness exams and will also give you opportunities to flex your internal medicine mental muscles.
We have on-site CBC/chemistry/electrolyte machines, digital radiography, ultrasound, flexible endoscopy, and a top notch group of technicians and assistants to provide as much help as you need. The emergency service is a great place to sharpen your critical care skills as we see a large volume of trauma patients and others with severe illnesses. We encourage our externs to get into the mix and get their hands dirty. We want you to perform the level of work that you feel comfortable with all the while knowing that an experienced vet is always close by.
Clarkesville Veterinary Hospital provides its externs housing, as well as the freedom to experience the aspects of the veterinary profession that they are most interested in learning more about. We have flexible scheduling and welcome any and all inquiries from interested veterinary students. Please call the clinic and ask for Dr. Lee Barton or send Dr. Barton an email at email@example.com.
